4WALL was founded by Sam Stubbings (of The RGBs) in 2005 after he attended an exhibition of Black Convoy work in Jaguar Shoes. The show was exceptional but the group didn’t have a mechanism for commissions or even to buy the work and it was funded solely in the short term by the Arts Council. From that point he decided that he wanted to get the Convoy collective together with other leading artists and see if something could exist between a commercial enterprise and an exhibiting collective. The answer was that it could – and the instinct to refuse branded or briefed work paid off quickly, with London’s top agencies and creatives such as Barbara Hulanicki of BIBA, Chris Blackwell – founder of Island Records, Selfridges, and Stella McCartney respecting 4WALL’s artistic values and commissioning work. We stick to the belief that people not only get turned off by brands and traditional marketing, but that the smart companies are the ones that give people the authentic.
